About AIAA

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is a professional society for aerospace engineering. This society was founded in 1963 by the merging of the American Rocket Society and the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences. As of 2015 AIAA has more than 30,000 professional members and continues to grow. Despite its name, AIAA is a worldwide organization. Although the majority of its members still reside in the United States, it is the largest technical society for aerospace engineering in the world. It also has 95 corporate members that range over many different engineering disciplines and is the largest publisher for aerospace materials.

AIAA offers many different branches including student chapters throughout the United States. In total, AIAA has over 190 branches in various universities and over 5,000 student memberships worldwide. These student branches are designed to provide the necessary tools so that their members can succeed in the aerospace field. They provide many different outreach programs such as conferences, intercollegiate design competitions, and industry field trips.
